Working with abstraction allows me to intuitively play with materials. Collage and fabric are integrated as if they are painted. Saturated colors and vintage ephemera become unexpected partners. I enjoy the spontaneity of it. I draw, sand, scrape, and rub into the substrate to expose fragments of found images transferred to the surface. It’s an archeological approach to building up a canvas. You don’t need to know exactly what it is, but there’s a history there. The process of finding visual clues that excite me and integrating them into my work is where I find my inspiration. I love to search for discarded items in thrift stores that speak to me in some way. I take photos everywhere I go and use these images as inspiration for my work. Forgotten areas on the side of the road and vintage items can be beautiful, but they can also feel slightly unsettling. I use this juxtaposition to create abstract work embedded with an unknown yet familiar history.
