After acquiring and spray-painting over 200 thrift-store frames, I painted on both sides of the glass, as well as adding transferred collage. The wallpaper underneath the paintings was handmade by collaging together hundreds of images from several books of wallpapers. These collages were made into copies and then transferred with gel medium underneath 5 large sheets of plastic. I made new imagery, as well as re-working drawings taken from the retro-style of my past paintings, to underscore my ideas about the past and present, and our acceptance and/or resistance to change. As the parent of a non-binary young adult who is still finding their way, the idea of learning to accept and embrace that which you did not expect, or may not understand, and to learn and grow from the experiences of others, seems more relevant than ever in these times. The thrift-store sofa could have belonged to anyone, and accentuates the idea of connection and the seeking of comfort.
