As a way to combat my fears of dying and grieving, I lunge myself into a space of discomfort by swaddling dead animals in silk and ceremonial offerings such as sage and flowers. Using them as a subject, the likes of roadkill are stand-ins for loved ones and individuals who have been mistreated, disregarded, and disrespected. Their mangled bodies and foul odors due to decay are barriers I actively move past to celebrate the importance of their lives. This overcoming is actualized through the depiction of their bodies in paintings, drawings, prints, photos, audio recordings, and usage in installations, sculptures, and burials. By masking and recreating these animals' destruction and fragility, I ease into the acceptance that my life and the life of my loved ones will end. However, through a legacy of kindness and care, I believe our lives can be extended beyond our allotted time.
