Harrington's paintings use elements from land and sea to explore the beautiful yet grotesque intersection of life, death, decay, and rebirth.
Although dark and surreal, his current body of works originated while collecting and studying shells with his daughters. Even in their broken state, they revealed unique and complex structures.
In his images, flowers, fungi, and moss combine with seaweed and coral to create somewhat of a headdress for abstract beings made from shell and bone-like materials.
The results are part still life, part figurative works inspired by 16th to 19th century portraiture and a love of great painters like Francis Bacon and Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
Brandon Harrington is a South Carolina-based artist living in Florence.
