The Aztec sun stone, or Piedra del Sol, is a Mesoamerican stone sculpture from the 1500s that depicts numerous elements of Aztec culture and mythology. It has been recreated in various mediums countless times. I have tried to create a version that maintains as many of the significant features as feasible while adapting it in a way that accentuates the stained glass and utilizes the light of the sun itself as an artistic element. Notable components are the current and past eras of the world (the center sun deity and four surrounding figures respectively), the 20 days of the Aztec solar calendar (the first painted ring), the cardinal and intercardinal directions (the eight points), and the fire serpents which served as weapons of the sun deity (the outer painted ring). Though the sun stone contains many elements related to time, it was not a functional calendar. There remains some scholarly debate about the meanings of certain features of the original sculpture.
