"Betweenland" was born during a period of illness and uncertainty. Wading through that steady Haw River current was my greatest comfort during this time. The river has its patterns: the rhythm of rushing water, the brush of a heron's wings gliding just above the surface, curls of a native datura flower opening at dusk. But despite this steadiness, the river is subject to change. Much like our bodies, the river is reshaped with each passing storm, season, or illness. In this artwork, the starburst cyanotype of my partner's shadow along the riverbank is embraced by a delicate pencil drawing of the forest. There is refuge in the river. "Illness is the night-side of life, a more onerous citizenship. Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place." - Susan Sontag
