"Led By Fire" is made up of 44,451 hand-formed, fired, porcelain textures. Each piece has a small wire in it securing it to the base. There is more than 4,000 feet of wire under the porcelain. Some of the pieces were rubbed with charcoal and graphite or have a layer of 22k gold leaf. Each piece was meticulously applied to the sculpted base. When I began making this piece, I was simultaneously writing out the book of Exodus. It was like taking a slow walk through the words, much like taking an unrushed walk on a wooded path. I was in awe that "the Lord went before them (the Israelites) by day in a pillar of cloud...and by night in a pillar of fire" (Ex.13:21). The imagery was rich in my mind and my thoughts began to wander to my own journeys in life and those that my young adult children are embarking on. As I began to pray that we would all be "led by fire," I made the gold line in the center of the piece. The other paths and textures grew and emerged from that original line.
