"Conversation Piece" is, as the name suggests, a work that inspires conversation. The work dances around topics of replication and mimicry in art, the borderline question of appropriation, and the western fascination with "the authentic." Painted in a manner reminiscent of the masculine expressionists, the imagery sources from an object of feminine fine craft. Deciphering not only whether the work itself becomes the thing it represents, but also the origin of the imagery. The work itself is derived from a commercial, industrialized object on the floor of a communal academic space. Its history and design precarious, all that is known is that it is an imitation. It begs the question, am I worth something to you now that I am on the wall?
