Aliyah Rivka Shuman is an interdisciplinary visual artist working with acrylic & oil paints, wheel-thrown ceramics, and textile materials. Her work applies an anthropological lens to the practice of art-making, engaging in a critical analysis of religious ideologies, practices, and traditions.
Born and raised in a small religious community in Nashville, Tennessee, Shuman draws upon her past lived experiences and current worldview to investigate the boundaries and stipulations associated with the tradition, using her studio practice as a mode of questioning and analysis.
She recently completed her undergraduate education at Middle Tennessee State University, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a Bachelor of Science in Religious Studies.

She hopes to attend an artist residency program before attending graduate school to earn her Master of Fine Arts degree and teach at the collegiate level.
