"Dreams Deferred" was first conceived during my solo exhibition at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art, born from a visceral response to the trauma of family separation at the U.S.-Mexico border. At its core is a hand-woven cage enclosing an oil painting of children sleeping on a bare mattress, on the floor, covered with an aluminum foil sheet and the American flag. Suspended 18 inches from the wall, the painting appears to float, trapped yet untouchable. Visitors were invited to share immigrant stories or reflections on cards and clip them to the cage's threads. Over 350 contributions transformed it into a living archive of empathy. This second iteration, "Dreams Deferred (We The People)," carries that spirit forward. Cards from the original show now spell out We The People in front of the cage. Visitors are invited to step inside and add their voices using new colored cards and ribbons-threads in a growing tapestry of love, healing and shared humanity.
