This is part of a series entitled "Legacy Interrupted" where I combine aspects of my ancestral ties to the confederacy, the era of enslavement, and Jim Crow, with my existence as a white woman in the south engaged in tearing down the very systems those in my lineage helped to build. Through self scrutiny and research, I've journeyed from an intellectual pursuit to a process of art making and personal reflection. The resulting prints are large, multilayered, and intuitive in the process that brought them into being.  Woodcut, silkscreen, and letterpress give image and voice to themes of remembrance, reckoning, truth telling, and hope.  Census records, last wills, and well-worn symbols combine with the visages of two figures: Hachalia McMath, Jr., in his confederate uniform, serves as symbol for generations of my family and Harriet Tubman, an image of strength, resistance, and survival, holds the memory of the people only otherwise known by dehumanizing statistics in family inventories.
