This painting is about moving to a new place. The entryway of a new era. Those first days start like a vacation when you have fewer responsibilities, usually no apartment or job, and the freedom of being a stranger. It's always a whirlwind of experiences, trying out new places and people that will leave a strong impression on you, whether or not they stay a part of your life. The ground you walk on is unfamiliar, so it's hard to tell how far away you are from the door. Light falls more softly with the rose-tinted glasses of newness. A few days turn into a few weeks, into a few months, and time slips by. Routines emerge naturally, and suddenly you're reminiscing on those firsts. It's hard to discern when you left the entryway or if you're still there. I captured this with an intricate but imperfect floor and a skewed spatial perspective so that the space between the doorway and the coat is unclear. When did you hang up your coat?
