"Not Gonna Join" is a pen and ink drawing that features a continuous line, never crossing its own path. The portrait depicts my father and embodies an old family saying that originated with my grandmother. She refused to adopt the United Kingdom's new currency in 1971 or use a newfangled telephone. "Not gonna join" became her motto, which my dad adopted later in life by refusing to use the internet, wear a COVID mask (unless legally required), or join the non-smoker club. Yet, despite his stubbornness, or perhaps because of it, my dad lived a full life and was beloved by everyone he met. Although the motto claims, "not gonna join," the two ends of the line on this portrait do join, creating one continuous path. The portrait appears to be a simple sketch at a distance, yet, a closer look reveals intricate squiggles that represent nature's inner workings or perhaps a mathematical problem.
