I was "captured by clay'". I shaped functional dishes with objects I found in nature as homage to the many plants, trees, rivers, mountains, and oceans. My work honoring nature was and is a tribute to the beauty that endures in silence. But grief and gratitude called me to something more:
When Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, praise of her brave contribution to the rights of all people filled the airways. Soon, I saw her among many forgotten women who had paved paths for women. I decided to honor heroines from long ago as well as young women of today with clay. Women who have no less fear than women before them. Each figure I sculpt is an offering, a remembrance, a promise that their stories will not be lost but will rise, enduring, in the hearts of those who come after.
I form the torsos, arms, legs, and hands of my sculptures from a slab of clay. I form the heads from a "pinch pot," adding rolls of clay and detail. I bisque fire the greenware sculptures. Then I stain them with oxides.
