"Post-Erasures I-III" is a pigment-based inkjet print addressing the erasures of personal and collective histories while looking to the future. Each piece is comprised of several images that address my past and the generational trauma of the WWII Tokyo fire bombings that my parents survived. The deeper layers include my diary pages from 1972, archival images of WWII bombings in the Pacific theater, and cheesecloth coated with ash (cheesecloth wrapped the napalm used in the bombs). The color, position, and transparency of the circles are determined by chance using a digital randomization tool. The notion of chance's significant role in shaping life's events is one that I explore throughout my art practice. Finally, in the uppermost layer is a visual illusion that reverses between two spatial perspectives. This is my symbol of our indeterminate future.
