Wilmington, NC
Brooks Yeomans (1957) is a native of Shelby, NC. Diagnosed early with intellectual disabilities, he was encouraged by loved ones to live a joyful and creative life. Gifted with a near-photographic memory, he began drawing at 20 when sister Becky gave him a sketchbook and pencils. In 1993, he became a charter member of Signature Home and Studio XI in Morganton, NC, established for developmentally challenged artists. Though the home and gallery have closed, Brooks still lives in Morganton and attends the Signature Day Program. His work is in the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland, and he has exhibited at the Outsider Art Fair in NYC... In 2014, he taught himself to stitch.
Rebecca Yeomans (1951), Brooks' sister, studied art at UNC-Chapel Hill (BFA '74) and earned an MFA from Auburn University, where she later taught. Based in Wilmington, NC, she is a full-time artist whose work combines botanical contact printing and stitching with a painterly sensibility.
