"Sol Legare Run" was inspired by my morning runs on Sol Legare Road on James Island in Charleston. This historic neighborhood is home to many descendants of Freedmen, with family homesteads that go back to the reconstruction era, and fascinating local landmarks and characters along the way. Imagery includes a marsh cottage, Backman's shrimp boat, the Seashore Farmers Lodge, and neighbors on bikes. My research at the James Island Library and Charleston Museum introduced two more figures-a farmer plowing and Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant William Carney. I draw on location, then work from my sketches to compose this imagery onto tyvek (house wrap). I fold the tyvek into quarters, hand-cut through all four layers with an x-acto knife, and unfold it. I laminate the papercut onto another tyvek base layer, then paint in details of negative space with acrylic ink. "Sol Legare Run" is my tribute to the Freedmen's history and descendants (my neighbors), depicted in dazzling symmetry.
