This painting stemmed from seeing the impact of red tide on my local environment. I was inspired by Hans Holbein's painting "Dead Christ," and relate Jesus to the corpses strewn across the coastline after a red tide bloom. The brown pelican brings mullet as an offering, the fish my family would catch. The mullet in southwest Florida have been a resource for over 500 years, but within the last 10 years the populations have become virtually extinct. A body is depicted above, praying over them both, where the ceiling fades to a starry night. As sad as it is, I still wanted hope to be present.
