I was given a 50-year-old discarded painting of an unknown old man sitting on a park bench with a cane, a newspaper, and a paper bag. He was resting his head on his hand. It was not well painted, and I was told that I could paint over it if I retained some aspect of the old man in it. I removed his clothing, and re-imagined him as an attractive young man that he might have once been. I struggled with what else to do with the picture, until a tiger-striped monkey visited me in a terrifying dream. The piece became about the chaotic life of an artist who can't seem to get a satisfying night of sleep.
