"We Seen the Sun" is an effigy that conjures a moment of fierce, unyielding protection for Black queer youth. The sculpture depicts a small cub sheltered beneath the watchful guard of a parental figure, a direct and instinctive tableau of love. The smaller cub is labeled with a homophobic slur. This text, however, is strategically obscured by the parent's leg, initiating a tense, visceral engagement with the viewer. To verify the hidden, derogatory word, the viewer must circle the piece, a movement that mimics the predatory act of stalking. It is in this forced intrusion that the parental effigy meets the viewer's gaze-this returned look is a defiant stand against the pervasive ostracization often faced by queer individuals within southern Black families. Here, the effigy instigates a transformative dance between object and viewer, a choreography of intrusion and defense. This activation is a deliberate act of conjuring-a bid for collective familial acceptance and safety for Black queer people.
