I've always had a vivid memory, which is both a blessing and a curse. While I'm able to cherish joyful moments, the memories marked by trauma tend to linger longer and more vividly than the good ones. Like me, clay and photography are vessels of memory. In my work, "Gifts From Dad," clay holds the memory of my dog, Lacey, who has been a source of comfort during PTSD flashbacks. Her presence is embedded in the sculpture, offering solace. I construct each ceramic piece whole, then hollow it out in sections. After firing, I take my time hand-painting each one, giving it the care and attention it deserves after enduring a process that mirrors trauma. The quilt features hand-stitched cyanotype photographs from my childhood. I chose cyanotype to symbolize how trauma can poison memory-its chemical makeup includes cyanide, echoing the emotional toxicity that can seep into even the most innocent recollections.
