For the past 20 years, I have been working with the mercurial image of a trapeze artist. Taken from a 1940's circus promotional film, this one minute clip, digitized in slow motion, has hypnotized me. Defying gravity, he swings across space, gracefully rotating his form around a swing, disappearing out of the frame, only to reappear and repeat his sequence. Projected onto multiple surfaces, this protagonist alternates between a giant, a palimpsest, a magic act. His transient body maps the materials in exacting rhythm, a reminder that life is fleeting. Home movies from the 1960's and 1930's flash repeatedly as black and white scenes of Mardi Gras and home life merge with faded color from 8 mm movies. Damage from age in both sets of films is left untouched, the medium itself reflecting the technology of those days and its fragility from age. The transcendence of the aerialist and photography of the past extracts the mythology of how time is perceived and its effect on our values.
