Kouros takes as its subject the Confederate monument in my hometown-a statue of a Civil War soldier whose stance recalls the pose of an Archaic Greek kouros. By invoking this classical form, the painting links ideals of heroism and permanence to how history becomes mythologized through public monuments. Using Cubist structure, expressive brushwork, and layered impasto, the painting reflects tension and the weight of the history it addresses. References to Anselm Kiefer's Occupation photograph at Paestum introduce a dialogue between personal and collective history. By recontextualizing Kiefer's act of confronting Germany's Nazi past, Kouros situates that inquiry within the American South, examining how Confederate monuments embody shifting meanings. The work reflects on how societies monumentalize memory and nationalism-revealing both the power and the peril of the images we choose to preserve.
