My studio practice acts as an anthropological investigation into my upbringing in Walton County, FL. After leaving my Southern Baptist religion behind, and even longer after covering up my Southern accent, I find myself in a place of tension-ridden nostalgia for the place I grew up. In "Mom (2013), Me (2023)," I've enlarged photos taken on my Nintendo DSi of my mom's bedroom from the double-wide I grew up in and my bedroom from the apartment I was living in as an adult. As the viewer gets closer to the quilt, the larger photo fades away, but new photos emerge. In the intersections of the spaces between the larger image sit snapshots from my past that I captured as a teenager. This push and pull of the piece is meant to simultaneously evoke both nostalgia and distance. Taking inspiration from the quilting practices of my grandmothers, this alternative photographic piece repurposes many photos I re-discovered on my old gaming device and translates them into a traditional familial craft.
