I was born in 1955 in Jim Crow South Georgia. My parents were migrant workers, and as a little boy, I actually traveled with them to the cotton and bean fields to work. So it's no small wonder that much of my subject matter lends itself to expounding on the struggle of Black people in America. The Civil Rights era made a huge impact on my visual and literary artworks. Now a lot of my works depict a deeply Southern narrative, such as clothes flapping on the line in the wind, shooting marbles, grandma hanging up the clothes, share croppers picking cotton, old wood houses, pine trees and chickens in the back yard. My works also portray the love and closeness of family, as well as the simple pleasures of living simply. I also love the ocean, which I didn't see until I was grown. So I love painting the waves hitting the shore and boats on the beach. I also love to depict people walking in the neighborhood and cars on the streets. I love to paint life. I'm a painter of life.
