I am a fiber artist, primarily making quilts. By working with textiles, I am part of centuries of tradition in a medium that has largely been practiced by women. When I dress a loom or thread a needle, I am connected to all the women who have ever spun yarn or hemmed a skirt or dipped fabric into a pot of dye. This connection fills me with inspiration and drives me to create. Textiles have historically been dismissed as women's work, but I am proud to be part of a tradition of women who have always been creating art, whether or not they received recognition for it.
When people look at my art, I want them to be awed, excited, and amazed. I want them to remember their grandmother's quilts, or their mother's sewing machines, or the quilts that were in their childhood bedroom. Most of all, I want viewers to come away with a sense that the humble craft of quilting, practiced with immense care and expert skill, deserves the same respect and attention given to other fine arts.
