“Masks are vectors of connection with great spiritual significance.” I channeled the healing forces of mask making to aid in my healing of a broken kneecap. The name of this mask is “Eshmun”, which means healer god and is associated with therapeutic connotations. Using a large twisted vine, I manipulated it into a shape for the base, which created the foundation.The skeletal form was created with screening material and wire. I was able to build a sound skeletal foundation using wire as my thread to reinforce the sturdiness of this first layer. I first mapped out strips of leather which I sewed with wire to guide me with my pattern. Using gold fringe, I wrapped it with wire before sewing it onto the mask. I sewed on each cowry shell with wire, one at a time. The eyes and nose were made separately using the same process of sewing as above. The buffalo teeth to symbolize the voracity of determination I had to overcome this time of pain and discomfort.
