This work was inspired by Donald Justice's poem, "The Wall", which spoke of the ubiquity of angels in a garden long ago, and the sound of their wings unfurling. Living in a woods, the palpable sound of large birds taking flight, compressing the air, lifting to become taloned miracles overhead reminds me of the poem. The sound also echoes our first conscious intake of breath and the last, involuntary exhale that bookends our mortality. Justice rightly states: "We do not see the Wall until the gate opens, and then the wings unfurl." Victorian mourning jewelry, crafted of human hair to celebrate love as well as the brevity of life, was my inspiration as I embroidered the lung and tree forms on the scarecrow's cilice. I wanted it to be gossamer and delicate, but like all hair shirts, a constant reminder. Hair embroidery in the form of tree limbs continues up the linen shroud on the backdrop, also sky reaching between the drawn wings, whilst the feathers below bring it all back to earth.
