I lived and worked on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, in a hole in the woods 300 yards from the Chesapeake Bay and three miles from the Atlantic. Schooled by woods, wind and water, I am part of this rich, fleeting pageant.
In my third act, my practice aligns with that. Recalling that much is revealed by the casual parentheses, I make paintings of daily walks and garden offerings, drawings that wrestle with ghost trees and the casual bones that line the ways. I have turned to composite work that seeks to hold a space for the volumes found in interstices: between bare limbs and antlers, within lungs, or the distance between mind's eye and object. Anachronistic media suits me best: silverpoint, shellac, hair embroidery; all give me more of a through line and feel more direct than contemporary options despite their time consuming qualities.
If I don't lose my nerve, I plan to make larger pieces, where each component both stands alone but also converses with a greater whole.
