"Convergence" was created in stages. I was at the river and noticed very cool patterns in the water, so I went home and painted what I saw. It's close, I go there almost every day, and every day it changes, as nature does. The thing that seemed consistent was the convergence of the waters at the lip of the bluff-it fell into the river below, shattering its earlier form only to reconfigure into a similar body of water after the brief weightless shift of becoming a waterfall. I started with the middle panel, and found I needed more space, so I stretched the panel above it, and I stretched the bottom panel, only to find I needed the side. It felt ok then, but my daughter insisted it must be symmetrical, so I added the right side. This is one of the largest and most time-consuming paintings I have tackled, but I was delighted with the results once it was complete. Of course, for things to converge, the pieces must come together, so in a way it all made sense.
