"Earthseed" is part of my series "If we ever touch ground," and its title pays homage to Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Sower." In Butler's novel, the protagonist, Lauren Olamina, is displaced from her home as her environment unravels from climate change and social inequality. Amid this transition, Lauren, the daughter of a preacher, creates a new belief system she calls "Earthseed." Growing up in the Southern U.S., my father also a minister, I find inspiration searching for stability amid an ever-changing world. In this painting, I reimagine the landscape (particularly, my parent's garden in Nashville) utilizing a format that mimics the sills of an animation. As a sequence, a panorama, a stoppage of time, this work invites the viewer into an invented expanse that marks my own transitional encounters in time and place.
