How do we find hope in the midst of destruction? How do we find the strength to love in the midst of hate? How do we experience joy when faced with so much suffering? In searching for answers to such questions, the need for community and connection, both with each other as well as with the natural world, are recurring themes in my work. Recognizing the interdependence of all life on this planet, I address the need for reconciliation and transcendence in order to heal our fractured world and build a resilient future. For this piece I drew on the words of Vivek Murthy, former US surgeon general, who said that to be a healer, you must be able to listen, to learn, and to love. By paying attention we can learn to love. Filtering out the noise, take time to closely listen to others' fears and joys. Take time to listen to the quiet wisdom of the natural world. Through listening we open ourselves up to learning, through learning we open to love, and through love we are able to heal.
