Julia E. Pfaff

Julia E. Pfaff has been quilting her entire live and has successfully turned a family tradition into a contemporary art form. Following in a family tradition, Julia began quilt making at the age of ten. With an undergraduate degree in Art History from the University of Toronto and a Masters of Fine Art degree from Virginia Commonwealth University she divides her time between being an educator and studio artist. For over twenty-five years she worked as an archaeological technical artist in Greece, Egypt and Jordan.

I make art employing a medium more closely associated with domesticity than fine art - stitched fabric. I was originally inspired by the work of conceptual artists to display quilts within a gallery context. My goal is the creation of a contemplative object, both beautiful and evocative, both well-crafted and spontaneous in design.
