This drawing came from an invitation to participate in an exhibition with five NC artists of made work in response to time spent in four City of Raleigh nature parks and preserves. The subject matter is a departure from the body of work I've been immersed in since 2015, an ongoing series of charcoal and graphite drawings derived from four cell phone photographs of shadows, but the methods and concerns are closely related. I work from images printed with an ordinary home printer to explore the compositional and observational possibilities encountered while peering through a narrowly defined set of boundaries. The task of translating this digital information into the extra-analog language of drawing requires one to slow down the act of looking and leaves behind an account of time spent observing closely and repetitively. From a point of view that is removed from clear context, my drawings are driven by the lure of ambiguity and my desire to describe things I don't entirely understand.
