"Selah" serves as the interpretation of the transcendence of my identity as a Black woman in Christ. In my youth, my sense of self was shaped entirely by the expectations and validations of others. I pursued completeness through conformity, striving to meet the standards society placed upon me as a Black woman. But in time, I learned that such balance could never exist as the scale was never designed to be fair. When I began to look upward, I found the beginning of freedom. I began to release the weight of others' opinions and expectations. As I grew older, my eyes started to close-not in blindness, but in surrender. Now, I float in the confidence of who God created me to be. It is in this divine identity that I find rest, and I say, "Selah." The prayer recited, that activates when you sit in the chair, acts as both a covering and an affirmation-for my younger self, and for every girl and woman who was ever told she wasn't enough, was too much, or needed to quiet her power.
